’Soul Man’ is a 1967 song written and composed by Isaac Hayes and David Porter, first successful as a number 2 hit single by Atlantic Recordssoul duo Sam & Dave,[1] which consisted of Samuel ’Sam’ Moore and David ’Dave’ Prater. In 2019, ’Soul Man’ was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry as ’culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant’ by the Library of Congress.[2]Song history and background[edit]
Co-author Isaac Hayes found the inspiration for ’Soul Man’ in the turmoil of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. In July 1967, watching a television newscast of the aftermath of the 12th Street riot in Detroit, Michigan, Hayes noted that black residents had marked buildings that had not been destroyed during the riots – mostly African-American owned and operated institutions – with the word ’soul’.[3] Relating this occurrence to the biblical story of the Passover,[4] Hayes and songwriting partner David Porter came up with the idea, in Hayes’s words, of ’a story about one’s struggle to rise above his present conditions. It’s almost a tune kind of like boasting, ’I’m a soul man.’ It’s a pride thing.’[3]
Sam sings the first verse, with Dave joining in the chorus. Dave sings the second verse, with Sam joining in the chorus. Sam sings the third verse, with Dave joining in the chorus, followed by a brief bridge section by Dave and then a coda, in which both Sam and Dave repeat the title phrase a half-step up, before the song’s fade.
The exclamation ’Play it, Steve’ heard in the song refers to guitarist Steve Cropper of Booker T. & the M.G.’s, the house band who provided the instrumentation for it and other Sam and Dave singles. Cropper provided guitar for both the original Sam and Dave recording as well as the live and studio covers by the Blues Brothers.
Issued on the Atlantic-distributed Stax label for which Hayes and Porter worked, Sam and Dave’s ’Soul Man’ was the most successful Stax single to date upon its release.[3] The single peaked at number one on the BillboardHot Black Singles chart.[5] ’Soul Man’ went to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States during the autumn of 1967, kept from the top spot by To Sir With Love by Lulu.[6] Outside the US, it peaked at number two in Canada.[7] ’Soul Man’ was awarded the 1968 Grammy Award for Best Rhythm & Blues Group Performance, Vocal or Instrumental.[3]Original and alternative recordings[edit]
During the same session, two versions of ’Soul Man’ were recorded, and both were subsequently released. The distinct difference between the two versions can be found within the first 30 seconds of the song. One version opens the tune with a more enthusiastic Sam Moore singing the words ’Comin’ to you..,’ whereas in the other version, the opening lyrical line is not as enthusiastic. The latter rendition is the more readily available version in all formats; the former rendition, on original 45-rpm vinyl pressings, tends to be harder to find but is the version most often played on the radio. *Psychedelic band Rotary Connection covered the song with added elements of Baroque music in their eponymous 1968 debut album.

The title of Cash Stax certainly sounds like a very non-thematic title for a slot game to have. And you’d be right in thinking so. Upon loading the game up, you’ll see that it’s really a classic slot game in the body of a modern day video slot. However, even with that being the case, you’ll find that it incorporates high quality graphics and gameplay. And despite it providing some fairly basic icons and imagery, there are one or two surprises in the game too. Let’s also not forget that it features a nice enough soundtrack too. So many slots tend to shy away in this area and stick to a generic arcade-sounding piece of music. However, one thing that can be said for Cash Stax, is that everything merges together in a good way. Therefore, you can guarantee a flowing, smooth slot game on the whole.Play Cash Stax RewardsThe general interface of the game is quite consistent with video slots, providing five reels and three rows. However, you’ll also see five separate sections above each of these reels, which we’ll get to a little bit later on. As well as this, Barcrest has made sure to add a total of 10 different pay lines into the game. The lines are also set in position, so you cannot alter them in any way. One thing that you do have the option to customise though, is the bet that you place per spin. This is changeable by using the plus and minus buttons at the top left of the screen. Not only that, but there’s the addition of the Big Bet button. This is something else that we’ll get to later on too.
Now, the visual side of the game is what makes it look more like a classic slot than anything else. While it does have five reels and three rows, its icons are not so modern. The first of its symbols is the cross, which is white in colour against a red background. Then, next in line comes the BAR symbol, and finally, the third standard symbol is the red number 7. Five of these on a winning pay line will multiply your bet by up to times 50! There’s also the addition of the circular nought icon as well. These in their standard form do not provide any kind of pay out. However, they do have the chance to become a golden nought, but that’s something we’ll move on to shortly.It’s true that most games with such a design don’t really feature special rounds in them. However, Cash Stax begs to differ on this point. To begin with, you’ll find that there is a wild symbol on the reels. This comes in the form of the smirking jester, who looks quite creepy to be fair. As a wild, he will stand in for all other symbols on the reels in order to form a winning combination. The exceptions to this rule are the standard noughts and the golden noughts.
Now, when it comes to these golden noughts, this is where the sections above each reel also come into play. Every standard nought icon has the potential to turn into a golden nought. These golden noughts work as freespin rings. You’ll need to bring at least one of these golden noughts into view on each of the reels in order for the freespins round to begin. The amount of golden noughts that you spin will determine how many freespins you receive. So, there is the potential to cover the entire reel set in them and receive a total of 15 freespins altogether. Whenever the noughts turn into golden noughts, they collect in the sections above each reel. Therefore, you can easily see what you have already managed to collect.
Finally, there’s the addition of the Big Bet button. This provides you with the chance to spin five linked spins of the reels at the same wager value. Kingsfoil coin master. The title of Cash Stax certainly sounds like a very non-thematic title for a slot game to have. And you’d be right in thinking so. Upon loading the game up, you’ll see that it’s really a classic slot game in the body of a modern day video slot. However, even with that being the case, you’ll find that it incorporates high quality graphics and gameplay. And despite it providing some fairly basic icons and imagery, there are one or two surprises in the game too. Let’s also not forget that it features a nice enough soundtrack too. So many slots tend to shy away in this area and stick to a generic arcade-sounding piece of music. However, one thing that can be said for Cash Stax, is that everything merges together in a good way. Therefore, you can guarantee a flowing, smooth slot game on the whole.Play Cash Stax RewardsThe general interface of the game is quite consistent with video slots, providing five reels and three rows. However, you’ll also see five separate sections above each of these reels, which we’ll get to a little bit later on. As well as this, Barcrest has made sure to add a total of 10 different pay lines into the game. The lines are also set in position, so you cannot alter them in any way. One thing that you do have the option to customise though, is the bet that you place per spin. This is changeable by using the plus and minus buttons at the top left of the screen. Now, the visual side of the game is what makes it look more like a classic slot than anything else. While it does have five reels and three rows, its icons are not so modern. The first of its symbols is the cross, which is white in colour against a red background. Then, next in line comes the BAR symbol, and finally, the third standard symbol is the red number 7. Five of these on a winning pay line will multiply your bet by up to times 50! There’s also the addition of the circular nought icon as well. These in their standard form do not provide any kind of pay out. However, they do have the chance to become a golden nought, but that’s something we’ll move on to shortly.It’s true that most games with such a design don’t really feature special rounds in them. However, Cash Stax begs to differ on this point. To begin with, you’ll find that there is a wild symbol on the reels. This comes in the form of the smirking jester, who looks quite creepy to be fair. As a wild, he will stand in for all other symbols on the reels in order to form a winning combination. The exceptions to this rule are the standard noughts and the golden noughts.
Now, when it comes to these golden noughts, this is where the sections above each reel also come into play. Every standard nought icon has the potential to turn into a golden nought. These golden noughts work as freespin rings. You’ll need to bring at least one of these golden noughts into view on each of the reels in order for the freespins round to begin. The amount of golden noughts that you spin will determine how many freespins you receive. So, there is the potential to cover the entire reel set in them and receive a total of 15 freespins altogether. Whenever the noughts turn into golden noughts, they collect in the sections above each reel. Therefore, you can easily see what you have already managed to collect.
Finally, there’s the addition of the Big Bet button. This provides you with the chance to spin five linked spins of the reels at the same wager value. Kingsfoil coin master.
